The History of the Philalethean Society and The Philalethean Alumni Association

The rapid growth of Heidelberg College in the early years of the twentieth century precipitated the division of the Hesperian Literary Society into two new groups, The Alpha and Beta Societies. On November 13, 1913, with a membership of 25 women, this Society chose the name Philalethean, or Lovers of Truth, in view of the spirit which would characterize their meetings and so be the standard for their literary work. They chose as their motto, Do Ye Beste. Their colors are emerald green and gold
Over time, all of the Societies at Heidelberg evolved into social groups, designed to enrich the campus life of students, the college environment and the community at large.
Today, The Philalethean Society provides guidance toward social and personal development, develops leadership and the ability to accept responsibility, provides activities for the Society individually and the student body as a whole, participates in charitable and community works on and off campus and fosters life long friendships.
The Philalethean Alumni Association was formed to continue the bonds formed in college, network in business and social circles, and to assist the Philalethean Society when needed at Heidelberg College. Alumni from different generations communicate daily via email and on our website.
The Women of the Philalethean Society have always been active in both academic and social organizations at Heidelberg College. The leadership, philanthropy, and scholarship learned as members of the Philalethean Society continue long after graduation. Our commitment to "Do Ye Beste" extends to both our personal and public lives. Our Alumni excel in everything from the
kitchen to the boardroom.
